Killing Fleas Naturally
Aren’t fleas annoying? Like why do they exist? I hate when I see my poor little doggy scratching till he bleeds because of fleas. My dogs are outdoor dogs so they are more likely to get fleas.
I have struggled in finding flea medication that is not poisonous. Most of the stuff out there is really harmful for your dog and some dogs have bad reactions to it. I am a person that prefers natural cures for everything so I set out to find some natural ways to kill fleas.
1. Natural Flea Shampoo
There are many flea shampoos out there but only some are safe and effective. I would recommend bathing your dog with flea shampoo every two weeks. Most shampoos last about 10 days so this will give you some time. Make sure you leave shampoo on for about 5 min and then rinse. I recommend Only Natural Pet EasyDefense Flea & Tick Shampoo with Geraniol Peppermint Oil for Dogs and Cats. This shampoo uses botanicals to kill and repel fleas.
2. Lemon Flea Spray
There are lots of Youtube videos on how to create this so you should check those out. The good thing about these is that you can spray in their bedding to kill any flea eggs and fleas.
To make your solution fill a spray bottle with water and add a couple drops of lemon to the water. Make sure to add enough to where you can smell the lemon but not much where it bothers your pet. The smell of the lemon is what’s going to keep the fleas away.
3. Creolin
Creolin is a cleaner. It is an industrial strength, all-purpose deodorant cleanser that eliminates odors. It has also been used in animal quarters, kennels and the general household. It may also be used to wash animals. It contains coal tar. To use creolin:
- Dilute about 3% solution into dogs water to be used for bathing.
- Shampoo dog and rinse with creolin water
4. Tea Tree Oil Spray
This process is really easy. All I do is buy a spray bottle and fill it with water then add a couple drops of pure tea tree oil. I would add about 10-12 drops. Be sure not to make it too strong nor too light. You want just the right amount where you can smell it but not have it be too strong for your pet. And again you can also spray in their bedding to kill any fleas and eggs there.
As always the most important thing is to keep your pet clean. I wash their bedding about every two weeks. Yes my dogs are spoiled and they use blankets and pillows. Washing their bedding allows any flea or larvae eggs to die. Some pets are allergic to fabric softener so pay attention if they get any rash or any other allergic reaction.
Please keep in mind that these procedures should be done more frequently than if you were to use flea medication such as Advantage or Frontline. If you have the time, and I hope you love your pet enough to, please chose the natural alternative.
PS: If your dog suffers from arthritis, inflammation, anxiety, or has any other issues, check out my blogpost on CBD for Dogs to see how CBD can help.
