Adopt a Pet | 5 Reasons to Adopt, Not Shop

adopt a pet

Adopt a pet don’t shop! There are great benefits to adopting a pet. A pet brings lots of joy to any person looking to bring in a new family member. Dogs are the most popular companions so therefore, I will be referring to adopting a dog in this blog. Here are 5 reasons why it is best to adopt a pet vs shop for one.

1. Save a Life

When you chose to adopt a pet instead of purchasing one from a breeder, you are saving an animal’s life. You are also saving it from shelter life, which is like jail for dogs. Shelters are overcrowded and most dogs are sad and depressed there. Most dogs who end up in shelters have been abandoned or are victims of abuse. It’s sad to see that shelters are forced to euthanize dogs just to make room for younger ones. Or, simply for the fact that nobody wants them. By choosing to adopt, you chose to give a pet a second chance at life. One filled with lots of love and care.

2. Stop Breeders & Puppy Mills

Most breeders out there are in it for the money. They don’t really care for the dog’s well being. Many breeders breed in their back yards filled with bugs, trash, and unsanitary conditions for puppies. Most puppies even end up dying because owners don’t give them their shots.

Puppy mills are illegal and force dogs to breed for the sole purpose of making money. Dogs are killed when they can no longer reproduce. These puppies don’t receive veterinary care and end up dying. If you chose to purchase one of these dogs, you are supporting the abuse of puppies and breeders will likely continue to do this.

3. Save Money

Adopting a dog from the shelter can cost about $60. These dogs come with all their shots and already spayed or neutered. A breeder is likely to overcharge for a purebred. Spaying or neutering your dog can be pricey. Not to mention all the shots dogs need as puppies.

4. Feel Good About Yourself

Studies have shown that people with pets are happier in general. Having a pet helps people with depression, anxiety, and loneliness. If you would rather have an older dog who doesn’t need much training, then you can find plenty of older dogs at the shelter. When you adopt a pet, you can be sure that you saved a life. This in return gives you great gratification that you did the right thing.

5. Behavior Myths

Some people believe that dogs end up in shelters because of uncontrollable behavioral problems or, something must be wrong with the dog. This is not true. As a matter of fact, the shelter is the best place to acquire a safe and healthy pet. Dogs that come from shelters have had constant vet care. Also, people who work at shelters do so because they love animals and want the best for them.

The Perfect Bed for your Furry Friend

I collaborated with Purple Bed for this blogpost because they also stand for dog adoption as opposed to buying. They carry super comfortable pet beds that are anti-bacterial and long-lasting. My Dalmatian loves his medium size bed. Here are some highlights of their dog beds:

  • The Purple grid is engineered to adapt to your pet’s body for deep pressure relief and support.
  • Antimicrobial cover, moisture-resistant, odor-neutralizing, and can simply be thrown in the washer when needed.
  • The tougher-than-nails materials are scratch-resistant.
