Makapu’u Lighthouse Trail | #2 of Hawaii’s Best Hikes
Aloha friends! Welcome to my blog. I recently visited Oahu Hawaii and my main thing was to do Hawaii hikes. We didn’t have much time so I wanted to get the easy hikes out of the way. Let me tell you about this amazing hike called Makapu’u Lighthouse Trail. It is rated #2 of the most amazing hikes in Oahu Hawaii because of its breathtaking views.
What to Expect
Makapu’u Lighthouse Trail is a 2.5-mile hike up a paved road. It is located near Waimea Hawaii showcasing its breathtaking ocean views. There is no entrance fee as opposed to Diamond Head Trail | #1 Hike in Oahu, Hawaii
If you are looking for a place to take amazing photos, thenMakapu’u Lighthouse Trail is the perfect spot. It is an easy paved hike with fantastic views of Oahu’s southeastern coastline, including Koko Head and Koko Crater. You will also see the lighthouse.
Makapu’u Blowhole
You can probably get closer to the lighthouse as there are unpaved small trails that lead down to the water. Lots of people enjoy a dip in the water and then come back up to continue their hike. Be careful if you do deviate as those small parts are unpaved and on cliffs.
If you go down the unpaved trails you will reach many large blowholes. These erupt on windy days so keep an eye out for these. I wouldn’t recommend children or inexperienced hikers to go down to see these as they can be dangerous.
There is no shade on this hike so if you are hiking in the summer bring lots of water and sunblock. The hike takes you up approximately 500 feet up to the viewing platform. Once you reach the top there are stairs to get even further up to enjoy the views. There is also a wheelchair ramp if you have a stroller or wheelchair. Trust me, these are the most amazing views of Hawaii so come camera ready.
Makapu’u Lighthouse Trail is the perfect place for a family hike. Dogs are allowed as long as they are on a leash. I would be so scared to let my dog lose anyways because you are walking to the side of cliffs.
If it’s whale season, you might be lucky to see some whales migrating. I wasn’t sure of the whale season but if this is a must make sure to check when they migrate.
Parking
This is a popular trail so expect heavy traffic. I suggest getting there early for a parking spot. The trail does have parking along the side of the road but I suggest getting there early to avoid waiting for a spot.
